About Legacy Craft
A Mortality Doula (also known as an end-of-life doula or death doula ) is a trained, non-medical companion who supports individuals and their loved ones through the final stages of life. They provide emotional, spiritual, and practical support, offering calm presence, listening to fears and wishes, and helping families understand what to expect. Because dying is more than a medical event, it is a deeply human one. Mortality doulas help restore dignity, comfort, and choice at the end of life, ensuring no one faces this profound transition alone.
Samantha’s Story
As a young child, I was faced with many deaths. The first loss I experienced was my Grandfather, whom I loved immensely. He died in 2001, when I was seven years old. In that same year, I also lost two Great-Grandparents, witnessed my brother live through a life threatening illness at age four, and lost my first pet unexpectedly. I was faced with mortality at a formative age, and since then I have been intrigued with mortality, death and grief. After many years of wanting to work in the funeral industry, I got my first job as a Funeral Directors Assistant in 2023. Once I was finally in the industry, it felt affirming to realise that I could do this work, as it’s something you can only understand when you’re faced with death and grief in new and intimate ways. After a couple of years, I realised that I desired to be involved in the whole end of life and death process, rather than the ‘after’. I yearned to be involved in the education, conversation, support and experience holistically. I completed End of Life Doula Certificate with Preparing the Way, and begun to fulfill my calling as a Mortality Doula.
